MAHHL+ - Urban cooperation in the Euregio Meuse-Rhine

MAHHL+ is a cross-border network of cities in the Euregio Meuse-Rhine. Its name refers to the cities of Maastricht, Aachen, Hasselt, Heerlen and Liège and their surrounding regions. In the 2010s, the cities of Sittard-Geleen and Genk also joined the network.

These cities are located in Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands and together form a closely connected urban area. Many inhabitants of this region commute across the border every day, study in a neighbouring city or take advantage of the cultural and economic opportunities in the neighbouring countries.

Cooperation between cities

The cities in the MAHHL+ network work together to tackle common challenges and seize the opportunities of a cross-border metropolitan region. The aim is to strengthen cooperation between the cities and to develop the region together.

By sharing experience and through joint projects, the cities can learn from each other and pool their strengths.

Relationship with the Euregio Meuse-Rhine

The MAHHL+ cities are an important part of the Euregio Meuse-Rhine. While the Euregio Meuse-Rhine, as a cross-border organisation, promotes cooperation between regions, authorities and institutions, MAHHL+ focuses on cooperation between the major cities at the heart of the Euregio.

The city network thus complements Euregional cooperation and strengthens the urban dimension of the Euregio Meuse-Rhine.

Joint development of the region

Through their close collaboration, the MAHHL+ cities help to make the Euregio Meuse-Rhine an attractive place to live, work and do business. At the same time, they foster exchanges between people, institutions and businesses across national borders.

MAHHL+ thus shows how cities can work together to shape a strong and innovative cross-border region.
