What is the Euregio
Meuse-Rhine?

History

The partner regions of the Euregio Meuse-Rhine have more in common than what sets them apart. Despite national and language borders, they share a common history as well as close cultural and economic ties.

Since the 1970s, cross-border cooperation has been developed in a targeted way. In 1974, Princess Beatrix of the Netherlands provided the decisive impetus. In 1976, a working group was set up, followed two years later by the framework agreement.

Since 1991, the Euregio Meuse-Rhine has had its own legal form. In 1992, the German-speaking Community of Belgium joined. In 2019, the organisation was officially transformed into a European Grouping of Territorial Cooperation (EGTC).

Today, cross-border cooperation is an integral part of everyday life in the region. Sometimes so much so that we forget that certain things cannot be taken for granted.

In 2026, the Euregio Meuse-Rhine celebrates its 50th anniversary: discover what we are organising to mark the occasion.
