EURIEC - Information and Expertise Centre
EURIEC (Euregio Information and Expertise Centre) is a cross-border information and advice centre dedicated to tackling organised and subversive crime in the border region.
The centre helps authorities and institutions to detect and prevent criminal structures at an early stage, especially when these affect economic activities or public structures in several countries. In a border region such as the Euregio Meuse-Rhine, businesses, citizens and authorities work closely together across national borders. However, this openness can also be exploited by criminal networks.
EURIEC helps to identify risks, exchange information and support authorities in putting preventive measures in place.
Cross-border cooperation
EURIEC works with authorities and organisations in Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands. These include municipalities, administrative authorities, the police, the judiciary and other public institutions.
The aim is to help these stakeholders deal with cross-border risks and criminal activities and to provide them with the knowledge they need for effective prevention.
As legislation, administrative structures and responsibilities differ between the three countries, EURIEC provides information and advice to facilitate effective cross-border cooperation.
Tasks
EURIEC provides support in various areas of preventing and combating cross-border crime, in particular through:
-
Informing and advising authorities on potential criminal activities with a cross-border dimension
-
Supporting the exchange of information between authorities in Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands
-
Analysing and monitoring developments in the field of organised and subversive crime
-
Raising authorities’ awareness of the risks of criminal influence on the economy and public administration
-
Supporting the creation of networks and cooperation between the authorities and institutions concerned
Prevention in the border region
Through its work, EURIEC helps to detect and prevent criminal activities at an early stage. The centre thus strengthens cooperation between the authorities in the border region and supports the safe and transparent development of the Euregio Meuse-Rhine.
