BES - Bureau for Euregional Cooperation in Criminal Matters
The Bureau for Euregional Cooperation in Criminal Matters (BES) is a trinational association of public prosecution services in the Euregio Meuse-Rhine and the Euregio Rhine-Meuse-North.
The aim of the BES is to strengthen cross-border judicial cooperation and to support the fight against cross-border crime, particularly in the tri-border region between Belgium, the Netherlands and North Rhine-Westphalia.
The Bureau supports public prosecution services and police services with its expertise, its advice and a cross-border network.
Tasks
The main tasks of the BES include:
- Advice on cross-border investigations and prosecutions
- Assistance with drafting complex requests for mutual legal assistance and with unblocking stalled proceedings
- Organisation and coordination of meetings between the public prosecution services and police services involved in joint investigations
- Support for setting up joint investigation teams
- Help with language and communication issues, and promotion of effective cooperation through innovative working methods
- Monitoring and analysis of cross-border crime on the basis of publicly available information
- Training and further training for members of the public prosecution service in the Euregio and beyond
Through this work, the BES helps to strengthen judicial cooperation in the border region and to make cross-border investigations more effective.
