EURO-cAIre is a project supported by the European Interreg Meuse-Rhine programme which aims to improve cross-border emergency medical care in the Euregio Meuse-Rhine.
The project focuses on developing and testing an intelligent software solution that enables emergency services and emergency control centres to better coordinate their available resources, in particular ambulances, across borders. The aim is to reduce response and travel times and to improve care in the border region.
In an emergency, borders must not cost time
In a life-threatening emergency, every minute counts. In a border region, the nearest available ambulance may be in the neighbouring country. However, differences in systems, responsibilities and languages can make cooperation more difficult.
EURO-cAIre is therefore investigating how emergency control centres can better share their resources and deploy them across borders. The participating control centres are directly involved in developing and testing the new software. Simulations are used to analyse the impact of the solutions developed on the accessibility of emergency services and on response times.
Communicating across language barriers
Another important focus of the project is communication between the emergency services of the different countries. A digital transcription and translation tool is being tested to enable real-time translation during operations.
EURO-cAIre thus aims to reduce not only technical obstacles but also language barriers in cross-border emergency medical care.
Cooperation within the Euregio Meuse-Rhine
The project brings together medical expertise, emergency services, scientific research and digital innovation. Its partners include Uniklinik RWTH Aachen, the City of Aachen Fire and Rescue Service, Hasselt University, the Limburg emergency service and EMRIC, the Euregional cooperation in emergency response and crisis management.
EURO-cAIre thus builds on existing cross-border cooperation structures and develops them further with new digital solutions.
Contribution to the Euregio Meuse-Rhine
EURO-cAIre helps to make the Euregio Meuse-Rhine a shared area in which emergency medical care can be organised quickly and reliably across borders.
Better coordination of emergency resources and fewer language barriers benefit above all the inhabitants of the border region: in a medical emergency, it is not the border that should determine the response, but the ability to provide the best help as quickly as possible.
