AEBR - European network and voice of border regions
The Association of European Border Regions (AEBR), known in French as ARFE, is a European network of border and cross-border regions. Since 1971, the organisation has been working to strengthen cooperation in Europe’s border regions.
Today, the AEBR brings together numerous border regions, Euregional structures and institutions from all over Europe. Its aim is to exchange experience, represent common interests and promote the development of cross-border regions.
Cooperation at European level
The AEBR helps border regions to develop their cooperation and to tackle the everyday challenges of cross-border cooperation. These include, for example, different legal systems, administrative structures or national regulations that can affect people and businesses in border regions.
The organisation’s main tasks include:
-
Representing the interests of European border regions to the EU institutions
-
Promoting exchange and cooperation between border regions in Europe
-
Supporting cross-border cooperation projects and initiatives
-
Providing studies, analyses and examples of good practice for border regions
The AEBR also acts as the voice of border regions within the European Union. It brings the experience and needs of border regions into political debates at European level and helps to ensure that border regions are given greater consideration in European policy.
In addition, the AEBR regularly organises conferences, workshops and networking activities that enable representatives of border regions to exchange views.
Relationship with the Euregio Meuse-Rhine
The Euregio Meuse-Rhine is a member of the Association of European Border Regions and part of this European network.
Through this membership, the Euregio Meuse-Rhine can contribute its experience of cross-border cooperation in the tri-border region between Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands to European debates, while benefiting from exchanges with other border regions.
Exchange and representation of border regions’ interests
Cooperation within the AEBR helps to pool the experience of different border regions in Europe and to develop common solutions.
The network thus supports the development of the Euregio Meuse-Rhine as a model region for European cooperation across national borders, while strengthening the representation of border regions’ interests at European level.
